The starry orb surrounding them represents the Universe, including the Sun and Moon below the footstool plinth. There is an epigraph below the orb, reading:

"The virgin Mary is taken up into the eternal bedroom, in which the King of Kings sits on his starry throne. The holy Mother of God is exalted above the choir of angels to the heavenly kingdoms"
