The thick wall that hides the church building from the passing street, Via di Santo Stefano Rotondo, is actually the remains of the ancient aqueduct, Aqua Claudia, which was built under the emperors Caligula and Claudius in the period 38-52 AD, and later, in the years 54-68, Nero had this branch added, which is the wall facing here.
