The structure amounts to a porch. The technical name for it is a prothyrum. As it stands, it has a pair of ancient grey granite columns with Ionic capitals, supporting a short barrel vault now in rough brick but originally plastered. Above this is a little flat-roofed chamber or portarius, intended for the church's gatekeeper
