The façade was restored by Antonio Manno in 1870, on orders from Luciano Cardinal Bonaparte, titular of the church.

The Romanesque bell-tower is from the early 13th century. (some sources say 1160).

The church is approximately 3 meters below the present level of the street. The church was at street level when it was originally built in the 4th century.
