To the right as you enter the left aisle door is the large, impressive polychrome marble and alabaster monument to Cardinal Francisco de Toledo Herrera (1596). He was a Spanish Jesuit theologian, one of the most important and influential scholars in Rome at the time. His specialties were the philosophy of Aristotle, the theology of St Thomas Aquinas and biblical exegesis. He was instrumental in the revision of the Latin Vulgate which led to the Clementine edition. The bust of the monument has a porphyry or red marble torso as well.
