The monument is of Paolo Emilio Sfondrati, the cardinal who arranged the exhumation of St Cecilia in 1599 and who died in 1618. The work is attributed to Girolamo Rainaldi, with the statuary by Pietro Bernini who was father of the famous Gian Lorenzo. Over the bust of the deceased is a relief showing the discovery of the relics of St Cecilia. The monument was moved to here in 1957 because it was obstructing the entrance to the Ponziani Chapel.
