To Brother Gregorio Petrocchino of Montelparo, Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina of the Holy Roman Church Who, from early youth, devoted himself to the Order of Saint Augustine, and rose through each of its ranks to the highest office of governance. Then, because of his well-proven virtues and merits, was by Pope Sixtus V, Supreme Pontiff, admitted into the most distinguished College (of Cardinals). And since in his whole life he showed himself most worthy of such honor and even greater advancements, at his death, he commanded in his will that he be laid to rest at the feet of Blessed Mother Monica, in front of her altar, that two perpetual lamps be kept burning there, and that twice daily, Mass be celebrated there by the priests of this church for the salvation of his soul. With bequests to the monastery of Aureus (or possibly "Aurea"), through which the annual and perpetual support for the above-mentioned observances may be provided, Giacomo Filippo Petrocchino, his excellent nephew, placed this (monument) in the year of salvation ... |
